what is your advice for a female who disobeys her husband when he calls her to the bed and she does not have any reason which prevents her from obeying him?

Q.The questioner is asking, what is your advice for a female who disobeys her husband when he calls her to the bed and she does not have any reason which prevents her from obeying him?

A.The shaykh (haafidhahullaah) said, he mentioned the hadeeth where the Prophet (Sallaahu Alayhi wa Sallam) said, any female whose husband calls her to the bed for relations and she disobeys him, then she is in the anger of Allaah. Allaah (azza wa jall) is angry with her until her husband is pleased with her. In another narration it is mentioned that the angels curse her. So the shaykh (haafidhahullaah) said the wife’s obedience to the husband is something major. It is a major affair, so if the female is not in a state that prevents her husband from approaching her then it is upon her to obey him and to respond and to allow him to perform that which Allaah (tabaarak ta wa ta’ala) has made permissible and if she does not do so then Allaah (azza wa jall) would be angry with her.

Is it permissible for a lady to pray to Allaah to be granted the death of a martyr?

Q.The questioner is asking is it permissible for a lady to pray to Allaah to be granted the death of a martyr?

A.The shaykh (haafidhahullaah) said it is permissible for a female to request from Allaah (azza wa jall) to be granted the death of a martyr. It is not a condition that in order for a person to die as a martyr that they have to fight. For example, the Prophet (Sallaahu Alayhi wa Sallam) mentioned a female that dies during a labour, her death is the death of a martyr. The Prophet (Sallaahu alayhi wa Sallam) questioned the companions, who do you think is a martyr? They said that a person that dies whilst fighting. The Prophet (Sallaahu alayhi wa Sallam) responded by saying then that means the martyrs in my ummah are very few. That means the martyrs in my ummah are very few. Rather whoever dies trying to establish the word of Allaah to be the upmost throughout the earth then this person is a martyr. And the Prophet (Sallaahu Alayhi wa Sallam) continued… Whoever dies because of an illness in his stomach, he is a martyr. Then he continued… a female that dies during childbirth she is a martyr. The individual who dies while drowning he or she is a martyr. An individual who dies in a fire they are a martyr. An individual who dies because of a building or something collapsing upon them they likewise are martyrs. The shaykh mentioned (haafidhahullaahu ta’alaa) but these are individuals who died upon tawheed. An individual who dies whilst committing shirk would not be considered a martyr even if they died by one of these previously mentioned means.

Is it permissible for a women to travel without a mahram by plane, train etc?

Q.The individual is asking, is it permissible for a women to travel without a mahram by plane, train etc?

A.The shaykh said the Prophet (Sallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said (as reported in Sahih al Bukhari & other than that) it is not permitted for a female who believes in Allaah and the Last day to travel except with a mahram (male guardian). When that statement was said by the Prophet (Sallaahu alayhi wa sallam) a man who was present stood and said yaa Rasoolillaah, my wife has set upon a journey to perform hajj and I have been registered/ listed to fight in a particular war (jihaad). The Prophet (Sallahu alayhi wa sallam) said go and travel with your wife, so the individual went and travelled with his wife. So this was the order of the Prophet (Sallaahu alayhi wa sallam).

Notice what the Prophet (sallahu layhi wa sallam) said: it’s not permissible for a woman. He did not specify a young woman or a old woman, he said it’s not permissible for a woman. So this shows you any woman. Any and every woman. Whether she is old, whether she is young, whether people are attracted to her or not etc. Regardless of this it is still mandatory that she has a male guardian to travel with her. Because of that the scholars say if a male guardian is not present for a woman then the hajj is not obligatory upon her. The hajj is not obligatoryupon her. Allaah ta’baarak ta wa ta’aala says in the Qur’aan: verily it is mandatory for the people to migrate to the house, to make pilgrimage to the house. The scholars said if the woman does not have a mahram (male guardian) then she falls under the category that cannot perform the hajj.

“A female would like to seek knowledge, but she is very busy with the affairs of the home ….”

Question 9: A female would like to seek knowledge, but she is very busy with the affairs of the home i.e., having several children. What is your advice for her, and what should she do?

Answer: As we’ve mentioned in a previous answer, it is obligatory for her to learn the Fard Ayn, from the affairs of Tawheed, Eemaan and other affairs of worship such as purification, prayer, Umrah and Hajj, if she wants to make Hajj and the likes of that. Therefore, she should request that her husband provides her with the cassette tapes and materials so that she can learn from them. Likewise, if there is something that she is uncertain about, she should ask the People of Knowledge.

Do you shake women’s hand at work??

About a man touching a woman who is a stranger to him…

The Prophet said: “That a man get struck with an iron needle in his head is better for him than that he touches a woman that is not permissible for him (to touch).” [Reported by At-Tabaraanee, Al-Bayhaqee and others and Imaam Al-Albaanee authenticated it in Silsilat As-Saheehah (1/447-448)]

And the Prophet said: “Indeed, I do not touch the hands of women.” [At-Tabaraanee in Al-Mu’jam-ul-Kabeer (24/342) and authenticated in Saheeh Al-Jaami’ (no. 8054)]

And ‘Aa’ishah said about the Prophet: “I swear by Allaah! The hand of a woman never touched the hand of Allaah’s Messenger – rather he would take the oath of allegiance from the women verbally.” [Saheeh Muslim (3/1489)]
